Long term relationship between paper producer and Paques
The Smurfit Kappa Group produces 5.5 million tonnes of containerboard per year and is active in 21 countries. Containerboard is corrugated or solid cardboard for making containers.
Since 1983, Smurfit Kappa and Paques have worked on 25 large effluent projects together. The majority concerns anaerobic treatment of contaminated wastewater. One of the recent projects is an extension of the treatment plant at Smurfit Kappa Haupt with a BIOPAQ®IC reactor, a THIOPAQ® gas scrubber and a BIOPAQ®Biogas Flare.
The generated biogas is used to power the steam boilers. Six of the mills also use the THIOPAQ® gas scrubber for desulphurization of biogas to avoid corrosion of downstream equipment.
