Royal Cosun

Green energy from wash water in sugar production

Royal Cosun is a sugar factory in Dinteloord, the Netherlands that produces sugar from sugar beets. As sustainability is very important for Royal Cosun, they wished to generate methane from their process water.

Sugar beets lose sugar when they are washed, making the process water perfectly suited for the production of green energy. Paques installed two BIOPAQ®IC bioreactors that treat 2 x 400 m3 water per hour. The result is a maximum of 20,000 Nm3 methane per day, which equals 8.3 MW of primary energy. If the process water would have been treated aerobically, it would cost an electric power of at least 1 MWe. Therefore, the solution with BIOPAQ®IC reduces Royal Cosun’s energy costs considerably.
